A key aspect of An Inspector Calls is age. This theme is where Priestley can demonstrate his belief in the upcoming generations and their ability to change the future. Priestley displays his opinions on the older generation through Mr Birling – a man who refuses to take responsibility for his actions – and Mrs Birling – a mother oblivious to the truth about her life and the lives of her children. This juxtaposes how he presents the younger generation – impressionable and willing to accept their mistakes.
